Physically, it takes the form of irregular flakes, a shape determined by how manganese settles during electrolysis. The flakes are solid but fragile-they do not bend easily but break under pressure-and have a noticeable two-sided appearance: one side is smooth, shiny, and silvery-white (due to sticking to the electrode during production), while the other is rough and has a warm brown shade (from being exposed to the electrolyte).
