Zirconium is usually extracted from zirconium ores. The main ores are zirconium-rich placer ores such as zircon and thorium sand.
A common method for extracting zirconium is through zirconium chloride reduction.

The ore is first immersed in a strong sodium hydroxide solution and then reacts with chlorine to produce zirconium chloride. Next, zirconium chloride is purified by distillation or electrolysis, and zirconium metal is obtained.
