Ferrosilicon: Why can’t we add additional materials?

ferro silicon alloy

1. When too much silica charge is added, the electrode may be inserted too deep in the initial stage. If the time is too long, it will cause a lack of carbon around the electrode, the crucible will shrink, the electrode will easily lift up, the material surface will have poor air permeability and may cause ignition, and even cause damage to the furnace. If the load is insufficient, the total value of the furnace will deteriorate, especially when the taphole phase electrode occurs. The consequences will be more serious, and the tapping operation will not be easy to proceed smoothly.

2. When too much coke is added, the electrode will easily rise. At the same time, there will be a lack of carbon in other parts, the material surface will be sintered, the air permeability will be poor, and the furnace will not operate normally.

3. The materials are unevenly distributed in the furnace, preventing the chemical reaction from fully proceeding. Especially if too much silica is added, the reduction speed of silicon dioxide will be greatly slowed down, and more steel scraps will be dissolved, which will reduce the silicon content in the alloy. If the quantity is large, waste may even be produced.
