Ferrotungsten is delivered in blocks with a block size ranging from 10 to 130mm, less than 10×10mm. The amount of broken pieces should not exceed 5% of the total weight of the batch. The maximum size of individual blocks allowed in one direction is 150mm. The surface of the tungsten iron block should be smooth and clean, with no obvious non-metallic inclusions and rust spots on the cross section and surface.

The most common method of producing ferrotungsten is the "blocking method", which uses carbon to reduce the oxides in the concentrate in an electric furnace, and then removes the solidified metal blocks from the furnace. There are also iron digging methods and thermite method.
