What Is Nickel Wire Used For?

Nickel wire is used in chemical processing, electronic components, furnace support, nickel wire mesh, filtration, and selected welding-related applications where corrosion resistance, predictable electrical properties, heat stability, and clean material performance are required.

When sourcing nickel wire, the key is not only understanding its common uses. The more important step is confirming the nickel grade, carbon limit, diameter, tolerance, delivery condition, working temperature, corrosion medium, packing method, and COA/MTC requirements.

Commercially pure nickel wire may be supplied under different designation systems, including UNS Nickel 200 / Nickel 201 and Chinese grades such as N4 or N6. These designations should not be treated as automatically interchangeable. The applicable standard, chemical composition, carbon limit, product form, and customer specification should be confirmed before ordering.

For industrial projects, the material name "nickel wire" is not enough. A wire used for chemical equipment, a wire used for mesh weaving, and a wire used for welding filler metal may require different standards, tolerances, certificates, and packing methods.

Primary Applications of Nickel Wire

Nickel wire is selected when the working environment requires a balance of corrosion resistance, conductivity, formability, and thermal stability. The following are the main industrial application areas.

Chemical Processing and Corrosion-Resistant Equipment

Pure nickel wire is commonly used in chemical processing where alkaline corrosion resistance and clean material performance are important. It may be used in caustic soda systems, evaporators, high-purity chemical handling, conductive connections, and corrosion-resistant fixing parts.

Pure nickel is particularly associated with alkaline and certain reducing environments. It should not be selected for every acid, chloride-bearing, sulfur-containing, or strongly oxidizing service without a corrosion assessment.

  • Caustic soda and alkaline chemical equipment
  • Evaporator and heat-exchange related components
  • High-purity chemical processing
  • Corrosion-resistant fixing or connection parts
  • Conductive or sealing components in chemical equipment

For chemical applications, confirm the working medium, concentration, operating temperature, wire diameter, surface condition, and batch certificate. If prolonged exposure above about 315°C / 600°F is expected, Nickel 201 may be preferred over Nickel 200 because of its lower carbon limit. Final selection still depends on exposure time, stress, atmosphere, corrosion medium, and design requirements.

Electronics and Precision Components

Nickel wire is used in electronic and precision components when predictable electrical resistivity, electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and processing performance are required. It can be used for electronic leads, support wires, vacuum-device components, and other precision parts.

Fine nickel wire such as 0.025 mm nickel wire is usually selected when small diameter, stable tolerance, smooth surface, and clean winding are more important than bulk material cost.

  • Nickel grade and purity
  • Wire diameter and tolerance
  • Surface condition
  • Tensile strength or delivery condition
  • Spool size and winding requirement
  • Batch consistency

Fine wire is sensitive to handling. Poor winding can cause wire breakage, uneven tension, or processing loss. For small-diameter nickel wire, packing and winding quality should be treated as part of the specification, not only as a shipping detail.

Metallurgy and Refractory Furnace Support

In metallurgy and refractory applications, pure nickel wire may be used for selected support, fastening, tying, or fixture applications in moderate high-temperature environments. It may be used for kiln internal fixing, furnace support wire, refractory brick positioning, or thermocouple-related support parts.

The boundary must be clear: pure nickel wire should not be marketed as a direct replacement for NiCr or FeCrAl heating wire. For continuous heating elements, stronger oxidation resistance, or long service life in aggressive furnace atmospheres, nickel-chromium alloy wire or another heat-resistant alloy may be more suitable.

When purchasing for metallurgy or refractory applications, confirm the working temperature, furnace atmosphere, load or fixing method, wire diameter, oxidation behavior, and expected service life.

This is especially important for refractory-related projects. A material may perform well as a support or fixing wire, but fail if it is used as a heating element outside its intended range.

Nickel Wire Mesh and Filtration

Nickel wire can be woven into nickel wire mesh for filtration, separation, screening, and protection applications. Nickel wire mesh is used in chemical filtration, petrochemical processing, battery material processing, laboratory filtration, and high-temperature screening.

Wire quality matters, but it does not determine the final mesh performance alone. Mesh performance depends on the finished mesh specification, including mesh count, aperture, wire diameter, weave pattern, flatness, and edge condition.

For mesh production, the wire should have stable diameter, suitable tensile strength, clean surface, and consistent spool condition. If the wire has poor straightness or unstable tension, the finished mesh may show uneven openings or weak edges.

Welding, Repair, and Maintenance Applications

Nickel-based materials are also used in welding and repair work, especially for cast iron repair, dissimilar metal joining, and corrosion-resistant maintenance. But pure nickel wire for general industrial use is different from nickel-based welding filler metal.

Welding filler wire should not be selected only by the base alloy name. Welding consumables should be specified by welding process, base metal, filler classification, diameter, and applicable welding standard.

Nickel and nickel-alloy bare welding electrodes and rods are commonly classified under AWS A5.14/A5.14M. The exact product form and classification should be confirmed for the welding process and application. For commercially pure nickel filler metal, ERNi-1 may be referenced in suitable welding contexts.

Cast-iron repair electrodes may be classified under AWS A5.15, including classifications such as ENi-CI. The correct classification depends on the cast-iron grade, welding method, joint design, and required machinability.

How to Select Nickel Wire for Industrial Projects

Nickel wire selection should be based on grade, temperature, corrosion medium, product form, diameter, tolerance, delivery condition, and documentation. A small difference in carbon content or tolerance can affect performance in actual use.

Nickel 200 vs Nickel 201

Nickel 200 and Nickel 201 are both commercially pure nickel materials, but they should not be treated as the same product.

Nickel 200 is commonly selected for service below approximately 315°C / 600°F. When prolonged exposure above this range is expected, Nickel 201 is generally preferred because its lower carbon limit reduces the risk of graphitization and carbon-related embrittlement.

Under common industry references, Nickel 200 / UNS N02200 has a typical maximum carbon limit of about 0.15%, while Nickel 201 / UNS N02201 limits carbon to about 0.02% max. The applicable standard and COA should be used as the final reference, not a general article.

This is not an absolute rule. Final selection must also consider exposure time, stress, furnace atmosphere, corrosion medium, product form, heat treatment condition, and the applicable design code.

Designation Description Selection Note
Nickel 200 / UNS N02200 Commercially pure nickel Commonly used where corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity are required.
Nickel 201 / UNS N02201 Low-carbon commercially pure nickel Generally preferred for elevated-temperature service where carbon control is important.
N4 / N6 Chinese-standard pure nickel grades Verify the applicable GB/T standard, chemistry, carbon limit, and certificate before substitution.
Nickel Alloy Wire Nickel-based alloy wire for special service Used when stronger heat, oxidation, or corrosion resistance is required.

Do not assume that N6 automatically equals Nickel 200, or that N4 automatically equals Nickel 201. The order should be confirmed by standard, chemical composition, carbon limit, product form, and COA/MTC.

Diameter, Tolerance, and Delivery Condition

Nickel wire diameter affects electrical behavior, mechanical strength, handling, weight, and price calculation. Fine nickel wire such as 0.025 mm is used in precision applications where stable tolerance and clean winding are important. Larger wire may be used for mesh, support, furnace fixing, or industrial connection applications.

  • Hard
  • Half-hard
  • Annealed / soft

Fine nickel wire may require tighter diameter tolerance and smoother spool winding. If a tolerance such as ±0.002 mm is required, it should be clearly stated in the inquiry and confirmed against actual production capability.

A practical inquiry should include grade, diameter, tolerance, delivery condition, surface condition, application, quantity, and packing requirement.

Nickel Wire Weight per Meter

For cost estimation, nickel wire can be calculated by price per kg or price per meter. The following table is based on solid round pure nickel wire and a density of about 8.89 g/cm³.

Approximate weight per meter, g/m = 6.98 × d²
Approximate length per kg, m/kg = 1000 ÷ (6.98 × d²)

Here, d is the wire diameter in millimeters.

Wire Diameter Approx. Weight per Meter Approx. Length per KG
0.025 mm 0.0044 g/m 227,000 m/kg
0.05 mm 0.0175 g/m 57,300 m/kg
0.10 mm 0.0698 g/m 14,300 m/kg
0.20 mm 0.279 g/m 3,580 m/kg
0.50 mm 1.75 g/m 573 m/kg
1.00 mm 6.98 g/m 143 m/kg
2.00 mm 27.9 g/m 35.8 m/kg
3.00 mm 62.8 g/m 15.9 m/kg
6.00 mm 251.4 g/m 4.0 m/kg

This formula is for estimation only. Actual mass depends on alloy density, dimensional tolerance, surface condition, and inspection method. For formal purchase orders, final weight should be confirmed by production and inspection data.

This table helps compare price per kg and price per meter. Fine wire may look expensive by kg, but the usable length per kg is much higher than large-diameter wire.

Packing and Export Protection

Packing is important because nickel wire can be damaged, tangled, contaminated, or affected by moisture and surface contamination during storage and ocean freight if packaging is unsuitable.

  • Spool packing
  • Coil packing
  • Straight wire packing
  • Moisture-resistant bag
  • Carton or wooden case
  • Vacuum or desiccant packing when required

Vacuum or desiccant packing may be considered for fine wire, long-term storage, high-humidity destinations, or customer-specific requirements. For small-diameter wire such as 0.025 mm, spool winding quality is especially important. Poor winding can cause breakage or processing loss after delivery.

Before shipment, check whether grade, diameter, tolerance, quantity, packing label, batch number, and COA/MTC match the order details.

Standards, Documents, and Inspection

For nickel wire orders, documents are used to verify whether the delivered material matches the agreed specification.

  • COA / MTC for chemical composition
  • Diameter and tolerance inspection report
  • Packing list
  • Commercial invoice
  • MSDS/SDS when required
  • Third-party inspection support such as SGS or TÜV when required

ASTM B160 covers nickel rod and bar, not every wire product. For nickel wire, the purchaser should confirm the wire-specific product standard, dimensional requirements, chemical composition, mechanical properties, and any customer or manufacturer specification.

Depending on the project, a nickel wire order may reference a UNS designation, customer drawing, supplier technical specification, product-form-related ASTM / EN / GB/T / AMS standard, or AWS classification for welding consumables.

For welding wire or filler metal, confirm the AWS classification, such as AWS A5.14/A5.14M for nickel and nickel-alloy bare welding electrodes and rods, or AWS A5.15 for cast-iron welding electrodes and rods.
