What is the main use of ferromanganese in steelmaking?

Ferromanganese is used as a deoxidizer and alloy additive in steelmaking. It is an iron alloy used in large quantities. The manganese ore used for smelting ferromanganese generally requires ferromanganese to contain 30-40% manganese, a manganese-iron ratio greater than 7, and a phosphorus-manganese ratio less than 0.003.

The steelmaking process must remove excess oxygen. Ferromanganese contains high-purity manganese, which is a highly active metal. Its chemical properties are more active than iron. When ferromanganese is added to molten steel, it can react with ferrous oxide to reduce the oxygen content in the steel.

Therefore, the use of ferromanganese alloy for deoxidation is an ideal deoxidizer. It can not only adjust the oxygen content of the steel, but also eliminate low-melting point compounds from the molten steel.
