Why Does 2mm Zinc Wire Outlast/Differ from ZnAl15 in Our Technical Tests?
2mm Zinc Wire protects steel mainly by sacrificial anode action. Zinc corrodes before steel. When a sprayed zinc coating has small pores, scratches or edge damage, zinc can still give cathodic protection around the exposed steel area. This is why pure zinc wire is still widely used for steel structure anti-corrosion, repair coating and general metallizing work.
2mm Zinc Wire gives fast and direct sacrificial protection, but the zinc layer is consumed faster in salt-air and wet-dry cycle conditions. In coastal air, chloride and moisture keep attacking the coating surface, so the zinc layer works continuously and loses thickness over time.
ZnAl15 wire works in a different way. ZnAl15 usually contains about 85% zinc and 15% aluminum. Zinc still gives sacrificial protection, while aluminum helps form a tighter aluminum oxide film on the coating surface. This oxide film slows down the penetration of moisture, oxygen and chloride. Because of this barrier effect, ZnAl15 normally shows slower coating consumption than pure zinc in marine and high-humidity environments.
2mm Zinc Wire is suitable when your project needs stable feeding, lower material cost and normal corrosion protection. ZnAl15 wire is the material we recommend more often for seaside steel structures, bridges, wind power towers, port machinery and other parts where maintenance is difficult after installation.
What Does the Salt Spray Test Data Reveal About Their Lifespan Differences?
2mm Zinc Wire salt spray data should be used as a comparison reference, not as a direct guarantee of outdoor service years. Real coating life depends on blasting grade, coating thickness, sealing treatment, topcoat system, local chloride level and maintenance cycle.

2mm Zinc Wire test panels usually show faster coating loss when chloride, moisture and air keep reaching the zinc surface. ZnAl15 panels usually keep the coating surface tighter for a longer time because the aluminum oxide film slows down the corrosion path.
2mm Zinc Wire and ZnAl15 test results must also be checked together with coating thickness. A thin ZnAl15 coating cannot replace correct surface blasting and enough coating build-up. 2mm Zinc Wire is the practical choice when your factory needs stable feeding, clean melting and lower material cost. We usually recommend our 2mm pure zinc wire for thin film capacitor end spraying, general steel structure metallizing, repair spraying, guardrail parts, tanks, steel frames and normal outdoor corrosion protection.
2mm Zinc Wire is also more suitable when your coating system is not exposed to strong marine corrosion. For many inland steel structures, warehouse steel parts and general fabricated components, pure zinc coating already gives enough sacrificial protection when the surface blasting and coating thickness are properly controlled.
2mm Zinc Wire for capacitor spraying requires stable wire diameter, clean surface, smooth pay-off and low impurity control. In this application, the key point is not only anti-corrosion lifespan. The customer also needs even melting, clean spraying and stable electrical contact performance.
ZnAl15 wire is more suitable when the project faces sea wind, high humidity, chloride, rain-wet cycles or long maintenance intervals. We usually recommend ZnAl15 for wind power towers, bridge steel, port facilities, offshore components, coastal pipelines and large outdoor steel structures.
