This system of rotary kiln incinerator consists of a rotary kiln and a secondary combustion chamber. As the solid waste moves down the kiln, the material is destroyed. Both the rotary kiln and the secondary combustion chamber utilize liquids, waste gases, and industrial fuels as secondary fuels.

Post rotary kiln incinerators can be used to process large quantities of solid waste in any liquid. In the drying zone, moisture and volatiles are evaporated. The evaporants then pass through the rotary kiln into the secondary combustion chamber. The solids are ignited as they pass through the combustion grate before entering the kiln. Liquid and gaseous wastes are sent to either the rotary kiln or the secondary combustion chamber. In both configurations, the secondary combustion chamber is capable of completely combusting volatiles and organics carried by suspended particles in the gas. The ash remaining in the equipment is primarily ash and other non-combustible materials such as empty cans and other metallic materials. This ash is usually cooled to exit the system.

There are two directions of gas and solids flow in a rotary kiln: directional and reverse. The reverse type provides good gas and solids mixing and contact, increased combustion rates, and high heat transfer efficiency. However, due to the relatively high relative velocities of the gases and solids, the amount of dust carried away by the exhaust gases is also high. In the same direction of operation, drying, volatilization, combustion and afterburning stage phenomenon is very obvious, the temperature of the exhaust gas and combustion residual ash temperature tends to be close to the end of the rotary kiln. However, most rotary kiln incinerators are oriented in the same direction. The main reason for this is that the N-direction furnace design is not only suitable for solid waste input and pretreatment, but also increases the gas residence time. Reverse rotary kilns are suitable for sludges with high moisture content and low combustibility.
