Product Introduction

Metallurgical Grade Silicon Carbide SiC 85% 75% 65%

Metallurgical grade silicon carbide is a silicon-carbon material used in steelmaking, foundry and other high-temperature metallurgical processes. In industrial use, it is commonly supplied as SiC 85%, SiC 75% and SiC 65%, with different grades selected according to furnace conditions, deoxidation requirements and cost targets.

Compared with abrasive or ceramic-grade silicon carbide, metallurgical grade SiC is mainly valued for its role in molten metal treatment. It can be used as a silicon carbide deoxidizer, a silicon-carbon additive and a furnace charge material. During steelmaking, SiC can provide both silicon and carbon sources and may release chemical heat during reaction, depending on the actual furnace operation.

ZhenAn supplies metallurgical grade silicon carbide SiC 85%, 75% and 65% in grains, lumps and customized particle sizes. Batch COA, export packing and third-party inspection can be provided according to customer requirements.

Where Metallurgical Grade Silicon Carbide Is Commonly Used

In EAF steelmaking, many plants face the same problem: ferrosilicon and recarburizer are added separately, which increases alloy cost and makes raw material management more complicated. In this situation, metallurgical grade silicon carbide SiC 85% can be introduced as a silicon-carbon additive and partial ferrosilicon alternative. It provides both silicon and carbon during molten steel treatment and supports deoxidation under suitable furnace conditions. As a result, the plant can reduce part of its dependence on ferrosilicon, simplify material addition and gain better cost control per heat.

In ladle refining, the common difficulty is unstable reaction caused by unsuitable particle size. Oversized materials may dissolve too slowly, while excessive fine powder can create dust loss during feeding. By using controlled silicon carbide grains such as 1–5mm or 0–10mm, the material can contact molten steel more evenly and react at a more suitable speed. This helps improve deoxidation consistency and reduces unnecessary fluctuation during refining.

For cost-sensitive steelmaking, not every furnace requires high-grade SiC 85%. Some plants mainly need a practical silicon-carbon source for furnace charge or general deoxidation support. In this case, SiC 65% can be a more economical option when the furnace conditions and steel grade allow it. It helps maintain basic metallurgical function while keeping raw material cost under control.

In foundry production, buyers often need to adjust both silicon and carbon during melting. If separate silicon and carbon materials are used, the process may require more handling steps and more complex material control. Metallurgical grade silicon carbide SiC 75% can provide both elements in one material, making composition adjustment more flexible and simplifying part of the feeding process under suitable foundry practice.

In furnace charge applications, fine powder materials may cause dust loss during transportation, storage and feeding. This not only reduces material utilization but also increases handling difficulty. Larger silicon carbide grains or lumps, such as 10–50mm, can help reduce dust generation and improve charging stability. For buyers, this means cleaner feeding, lower material loss and better use of the purchased product.

Packing Options for Different Particle Sizes

Common packing options include:

Packing Type Application
25kg bags Small and medium orders
1 MT jumbo bags Bulk industrial supply
Jumbo bags with PE liner Moisture protection
Pallet packing Easier handling
Customized packing Based on buyer requirements

Moisture-proof packing is recommended for silicon carbide grains and powder, especially during long-distance sea transportation.

What Buyers Should Check Before Shipment

For industrial buyers, stable quality is more important than a low quotation. A product with unstable SiC content, excessive moisture or irregular particle size may cause feeding problems and affect furnace performance.

Zhen An can provide:

  • Batch COA
  • SiC content testing
  • Free carbon inspection
  • Fe₂O₃ and moisture control
  • Particle size screening
  • Customized size production
  • Third-party inspection before shipment

We accept third-party inspection before shipment, including SGS, BV, Intertek or other internationally recognized inspection agencies.

FAQ

Q:What is metallurgical grade silicon carbide used for?

A:Metallurgical grade silicon carbide is mainly used for steelmaking deoxidation, furnace charge, ladle refining, slag conditioning, foundry applications and silicon-carbon addition.

Q:What is the difference between SiC 85%, 75% and 65%?

A:The main difference is SiC content and cost-performance balance. SiC 85% provides higher active SiC input, SiC 75% balances performance and cost, while SiC 65% is often used for cost-sensitive metallurgical applications.

Q:Can silicon carbide replace ferrosilicon in steelmaking?

A:Silicon carbide can be used as a partial alternative to ferrosilicon in some steelmaking processes, but it is not always a complete replacement. The decision depends on furnace type, steel grade, carbon target, silicon recovery and operating practice.

Q:What particle size is suitable for silicon carbide deoxidizer?

A:Common sizes include 1–5mm, 0–10mm and 10–50mm. Fine grains react faster, while larger lumps are more suitable for furnace charge and lower dust loss.

Q:Why is moisture control important for SiC?

A:High moisture may affect feeding stability, storage condition and furnace operation. Moisture-proof packing is recommended, especially for long-distance transportation.

Q:Do you provide COA or third-party inspection?

A:Yes. COA can be provided for each batch. We accept third-party inspection before shipment, including SGS, BV, Intertek or other internationally recognized inspection agencies.
